What was it like to live 2,000
years ago
lthough
life during the time of Christ was entirely different than it is today,
there were also striking similarities. People worked, played, paid
taxes, raised children, got married and worshiped. Money was certainly
important during biblical times as it was mentioned 129 times in the
Bible while food was only mentioned 124 times. Raising a family 2,000
years
ago had many challenges just like today. In addition to providing food
and shelter, any working man beyond the age of 20 was required to pay
a series of taxes. Those who collected these taxes were despised for
their ruthless tactics to insure payment. It was the obligation of
the males to make sure that they were educated and had a trade or were
apprenticed into a family business in order to provide for their family.
Brides in biblical times sometimes enjoyed fantastic wedding ceremonies
with an enormous number of their friends and family. They would usually
wear a traditional headband that included ten coins that were displayed
to their guests. Interestingly, the ceremony was usually followed by
a wedding feast that was hosted by the groom's parents. This custom
still exists thousands of years later! In fact, it was following a
wedding ceremony that Christ performed the first of his miracles by
turning water into wine.
